$1,000,000 added in the House for the Allen Telescope Array in Mountain View, Calif. This “alien” project is part of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). SETI describes the telescope as “dedicated to astronomical and simultaneous search for extra-terrestrial intelligence observations.” No word on how it will help defend the world against an alien invasion.
$1,000,000 secured by now-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to fund the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center. In a September 2006 press release announcing her pork victory, she said the center will serve as an “education center and project to preserve the site of the U.S. Army’s first language school established in 1941.”

Yes, but massive cuts is only the beginning. What I would like to see happen is for bills in Washington to be judged on their merits, without attaching riders/pork. I am also in favor of the line item veto, which would allow the President to pass a bill, but veto some or all of the riders attached to it.
Every single requisition should be judged individually, not slipped into a popular spending bill to get funding.
SETI should be part of the NASA budget, not an individual entity, for example.
A lot of the pork lately seems to be corporate giveaways. If you look at the latest supplemental war budget (HR 1592), you'll find $100 million for citrus assistance, $74 million for peanut storage costs, 25 million for spinach growers, and $25 million for livestock, among others. What, exactly, do these items have to do with military funding?
As an aside, SETI got $2.5 million last year, so the $1M this year is a healthy decrease. (I have the 2006 Pig Book).
