when buying eyepieces for telescope, how do i know whether or not the eyepiece's gonna fit into the telescope?
what kind of features do i have to look for? i usually see numbers like 2.4", 5", 7", etc... and i dont know what they mean. Im trying to buy new eyepieces for my new telescope and dont know what to look for? my telescope brand is Meade 60mm (2.4") 700mm focal length refractor. Please Answer and thank you
Your telescope could take either 1.25 inch diameter or 0.965 inch diameter eye lenses. These are two smaller standard ones. Larger ones like 2 inch will not fit.
The measure of 5mm, 7mm, up to about 32mm show the focal length of the eye lens. This will be used to find the magnification of your view. Divide the main tube focal length (700mm) by the eyepiece focal length (7mm gives 100x). The view is much narrower in the high powers. You can find super wide angle eyepieces from Orion, Televue and others to have high power and a wider view, but they get very expensive.
Most viewing of stars is done at low to medium power (longer eyepiece focal lengths). Only the Moon and planets could benefit from high power. And then, the air above messes up the view most of the time.
