Are you more of a morning bird or a night owl?
How much sleep do you get per night? Do you think you'd feel better on less or more sleep?
I'm a morning lark and a night owl. There have been a few times when sleep felt almost luxuriously wonderful, but most of the time it's a chore I must complete rather than something I look forward to doing. My parents always struggled to get me to go to bed as a kid, and still get on my case about it all the time. In the tenth grade I read an interview with Bill Clinton in Vanity Fair that discussed his longstanding routine of only sleeping four hours per night, and showed it to them to try to substantiate my theory that I really didn't need as much sleep as they told me I did. I admire their restraint in not rolling their eyes at me, haha. My mom is a neurologist, and the next day she showed me all these medical studies about why so vital for teens to get a quality amount of sleep. I began to make more of an effort then, but still struggle to sleep for the recommended amount. I just read the article I linked below about people who naturally are "short sleepers," and it resonated with me. They can be healthy and productive on a below-average amount of sleep.
An insufficient amount of sleep has recently begun to take a toll on my health, but for the most part I really have been able to function very well on around five hours. I might have a sturdier immune system if I slept more and allowed it to rejuvenate and fortify itself. It's challenging for me to sleep any longer than that, though, because my body and mind just seem to be on this internal alarm clock that goes off at the five hour mark. I'll force myself to stay in bed with the hope I'll catch a wave of sleep again, but usually I end up just wasting time lying there awake. I prefer to get up and work on projects, read, come on here, dance or do something else engaging.
At the moment it's 6:29 on a Saturday morning, and I've been wide awake since 5. Despite the paltry amount of sleep I feel energetic and happy. I can't wait for the sun to come up already so I can go for a run and really greet the day. I'm not usually this hyper, but I have a lot to be excited about today. It's going to be a beautiful day in every sense, and I don't want to sleep through any more of it.
